Dry Goods, 2021
Maple wall-hanging chest with two salvaged ceramic drawers and one wooden drawer in padauk with maple inlay.
I found the ceramic drawers at a local charity shop, dusty without their context as drawers and having sustained a few knocks, so I restored them to usefulness and made them a friend! They’re likely from a mid-century Swedish kitchen where a small bank of these drawers would have held dry goods under a kitchen cabinet. Because they were the only thing I couldn’t change, they became the “givens” around which everything else was measured, cut, and built. The same will stay true as the piece ages! The contrast between woods and glaze will mellow—both woods darkening and the glaze staying the same, still the fixed point in the piece.
